Seventh Grade
What students have done this year:
*Students viewed artwork from the graphic artist Milton Glaser. We focused on his famous painting of Bob Dylan. Students created silhouettes of their faces and tried to emulate the famous work of art in the hair style. Students used different shapes and patterns to create unique hairstyles for their silhouette.
*Students worked on optical illusions using circles and a grid. Students used compasses to form their circles. They are learning that the way they draw their lines will make an object look 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional. Using curved lines in the circles, and straight lines in the background, the circles look like they pop off the paper. A little shading with colored pencil under the circles at the end helps too.
*Students have learned how to draw faces with the correct proportion. The first drawing we have been working on is a pencil drawing. They are learning how and where to draw the features of the face to make it proportional, as well as learning how and where to use shading. Students can print off a picture of a movie character, famous person, or monster to look at while creating another face drawing. Even though they have something to look at this time, they will still use the proportion directions on how to draw a face. They will be able to color and shade this drawing with colored pencils.
*Students learning to make a monochromatic painting using one color plus white and black. They are making a night scene where they start with a white moon. They need to add a little of their color to the white and mix to create the lightest tint of their color and paint it around the moon. They will keep adding more of their color to white to get darker and darker while filling up their paper. They will then paint a ribbon of their color before adding black to create shades. They will add a little black at a time to make their color darker and darker. They will do this until the paper is filled. Students will then draw a tree without leaves and can add spooky elements if they wish. They will be coloring the tree and other objects with a black oil pastel to create a silhouette.
*Students learned how to draw a person (figure) in motion. Students were taught perspective in drawing people. Keeping this in mind, students drew a person in correct proportion doing some type of activity. Students added details and color to this drawing. Once the person was finished, they chose 2 other colored papers and cut the figure out of all 3. On a large sheet of white paper, students created a background image to show what activity their person was doing. When finished coloring the background, students glued all three figures onto the paper with the detailed one in the front. The colored ones behind it represented the motion of the first figure.
*Students finished up with an introduction to one point perspective using their names. Students were taught how to use their ruler to create block letters for their name. At the top- middle of their paper, students made a dot and drew lines connecting the dot to all of the corners in the letters. This helps create 3D letters in the correct proportion. Students were taught how to shade their letters to get more of a 3D effect.
